To start sewing clothes you need a basic sewing machine with straight and zigzag stitches, good fabric scissors, pins, a measuring tape and a beginner pattern. Woven cotton and linen are the easiest fabrics to learn on; leave slippery and stretchy fabrics for later.
Pick a pattern labelled beginner from an independent company such as Tilly and the Buttons or a free one from Peppermint Sewing School. PDF patterns are printed at home on A4 or Letter paper and taped together, or printed at a copy shop in large format.
Measure yourself and choose your size from the pattern’s body measurement chart, not your ready-to-wear size. If standard sizes never fit, made-to-measure tools like FreeSewing or Tailornova can generate a pattern from your measurements.
