Tips for a good pattern from a photo

Crop tightly around the subject first: every stitch spent on background is a stitch the subject does not get. Raise the contrast a little in any photo editor, and choose a photo where the subject is lit evenly.

After generating, look for single stitches of a colour surrounded by another colour (confetti stitches). Lowering the number of colours removes most of them. For the finished size, see the cross-stitch fabric calculator.

How to use it

  1. Choose a photo or picture. A clear subject with good contrast and a plain background works best.
  2. Set the width in stitches. The height follows the picture’s proportions.
  3. Choose how many colours to use. Fewer colours give a cleaner chart that is easier to stitch.
  4. Pick the chart style: symbols for cross stitch, or colour blocks for C2C crochet, tapestry crochet and knitting colourwork.
  5. Download the chart as an image or print it. The colour key lists every colour with its stitch count.

Questions

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The pattern is made in your browser with JavaScript. Your picture never leaves your device.

Does it match DMC thread colours?

Colours are taken from your photo, not matched to a thread brand. Use the hex codes in the colour key to choose the closest floss or yarn from your brand’s colour card.

How many stitches wide should my pattern be?

For a small cross-stitch piece, 60–100 stitches is a good start. On 14-count Aida, 100 stitches is about 7.1 inches (18 cm). C2C blankets are often 80–120 squares wide.

How many colours should I use?

Between 8 and 20 colours works for most photos. Portraits may need 25–30. Each extra colour means more thread changes.

Can I use the chart for knitting?

Yes. Choose colour blocks and use it as a colourwork chart. Knitted stitches are wider than they are tall, so the knitted motif will look a little squashed unless you adjust the height.
