Cross stitch is counted embroidery: you follow a chart where each square is one X-shaped stitch on an even grid fabric. Start with 14-count Aida, a tapestry needle and a small chart or kit.
Charts list colours by floss number, almost always DMC. Use two strands of floss on 14-count Aida. The StitchRove cross-stitch fabric calculator tells you how big to cut your fabric for any design and fabric count.
To design your own patterns, use a chart maker such as Stitch Fiddle or FlossCross, or convert a photo with a free converter and then tidy up the result by hand.
