Printable cross-stitch graph paper

Draw your design one square per stitch, mark colours with symbols, and count in blocks of 10 using the bold lines. The numbers along the top and left edge mark every bold line so you can match the chart to your fabric.

To start from a photo instead of a blank grid, try the photo to cross-stitch pattern maker. For finished size and fabric to cut, use the cross-stitch fabric calculator.

How to use it

  1. Choose a square size: 10 squares per inch is the classic charting size, or pick 14, 16 or 18 for true fabric size.
  2. Optionally set the design size in stitches to get a grid of exactly that size.
  3. Keep bold lines every 10 squares and turn on centre marks to find the middle of your design.
  4. Download the PDF or PNG and print at 100%.

Questions

What size graph paper is used for cross stitch?

Most hand-drawn cross-stitch charts use 10 squares per inch, which is large enough to draw symbols in. If you want the chart to show the true size of your stitches, choose the square size that matches your Aida count, such as 14 per inch for 14-count.

Why are there bold lines every 10 squares?

Counting stitches in groups of 10 is the standard for cross-stitch charts. The bold lines make it easy to find your place and to count across the fabric, where many stitchers baste a matching grid.

What are the centre marks for?

The arrows on each edge point to the middle row and column. Most stitchers start from the centre of the chart and the centre of the fabric so the design ends up centred.

How big will my design be on fabric?

Divide the number of stitches by your fabric count. Use the cross-stitch fabric calculator to get the design size and how much fabric to cut.
