Work out the finished design size and how much Aida, evenweave or linen to cut for any stitch count.
| Fabric | Design size (in) | Design size (cm) | Cut fabric (in) |
|---|
Design size = stitches ÷ (fabric count ÷ threads stitched over). Fabric to cut = design size + 2 × margin. Results are rounded up to the nearest quarter inch or half centimetre so you never cut too small.
Divide the number of stitches by the fabric count. A design 140 stitches wide on 14-count Aida is 140 ÷ 14 = 10 inches wide. On evenweave stitched over two threads, divide the count by two first: 28-count over two works like 14-count.
Add at least 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm) on every side for hoops and framing. For a design that will be framed with a mat, add 3–4 inches per side.
The count is the number of stitches (Aida) or threads (evenweave and linen) per inch. Higher counts mean smaller stitches and a smaller finished design.
14-count Aida is the most common choice for beginners because the holes are easy to see.
