Knitting graph paper generator, sized to your gauge

Free printable knitter’s graph paper with cells in the true proportion of your stitches. Set your gauge, add stitch and row numbers, download PDF, PNG or SVG.

Presets use the middle of each range, with rows estimated at 1.35 × stitches. Your own swatch is always more accurate.
Paper & style

Print at 100% / Actual size, not “Fit to page”. Then measure the check ruler at the bottom of the sheet: if it is exactly 1 inch and 2 cm, your cells are true to size.

Knitter’s graph paper, sized to your stitches

Each cell is 4 inches ÷ stitches wide and 4 inches ÷ rows tall, using your gauge. The yarn weight presets follow the Craft Yarn Council standard ranges, and the line under the preview tells you how much knitted fabric one sheet represents. A colourwork motif drawn on this paper keeps its shape when you knit it, which is why Fair Isle, intarsia and mosaic designers chart on proportional paper.

How to use it

  1. Pick your yarn weight from the Craft Yarn Council standard, or better, type the stitches and rows from your own blocked swatch.
  2. Choose flat or in the round so the row numbers sit on the correct side.
  3. Set the paper size and whether you want bold lines every 5 or 10 stitches.
  4. Download the PDF and print it at 100% (actual size), then colour in your chart.

Questions

Why is knitting graph paper not square?

Knitted stitches are wider than they are tall: in stockinette there are usually about a third more rows than stitches per inch. A motif drawn on square paper therefore comes out squashed vertically once knitted. Knitter’s graph paper uses cells in the same proportion as your stitches, so what you draw is what you knit.

How do I make graph paper that matches my gauge?

Knit a swatch, count stitches and rows over 4 inches (10 cm) after blocking, and enter those numbers. The cells are then the real size of your stitches when printed at 100%.

How are knitting charts numbered?

Stitches are numbered from right to left, and rows from the bottom up. For flat knitting, right-side rows are numbered on the right edge and wrong-side rows on the left. In the round every round is read from right to left, so all numbers are on the right.

Is this knitting graph paper free?

Yes. Download as many PDF, PNG or SVG sheets as you like, with no sign-up and no watermark.
